Listen to a radio programme about a church in Rome. What is not mentioned?
If you’re going to Rome, you must visit a church called San Clemente – it’s not far from the Coliseum. From the outside it looks like any other church in Rome – and there are a lot of them. But inside it’s full of secrets and surprises. When you go in, you’ll find yourself in this 12th-century church with beautiful paintings and statues everywhere. Then you can go down a flight of stairs and you’re underground, in another church that was built in the 4th century. And then, if you go down another flight of stairs to the bottom, you’re in the ancient ruins of a 3rd-century temple and a Roman home from the first century. To make things even more mysterious, when you’re down at the bottom, you can hear the sound of water from an underground stream.

Monologue: Holidays Crowded beach versus the mountain

- Why do people choose these places to spend their holidays?
- Where did you spend your last holiday? What was it like?
- If you could choose, where would you like to spend your next holidays?

Listen to a tourist in Cornwall getting information. Write T (true) or F (false) next to each statement.
Tourist:     I’ve just arrived and I’m looking for information about what I can do here.
Info man:     That shouldn’t be too difficult. There’s lots to do in Cornwall. What are you interested in?
Tourist:     Hmmm, I guess I’m the fresh air and outdoors type – I like anything that gets me moving.
Info man:     Then maybe you should try coasteering. It’s very popular with young people here.
Tourist:     Coasteering? I’ve never heard of it! What is it?
Info man:     Well, it’s hasn’t been around for very long. It started in the 1990s, I think. What you do is explore the coast – but not a relaxed walk along the seashore. Instead, you climb cliffs and dive into the ocean from them. You explore sea caves and even get a chance to get close to the seals and other wildlife here in Cornwall.
Tourist:     It sounds exciting but I’ve never climbed before – I’m not sure I’ll know what to do.
Into man:     Don’t worry. You go to one of the coasteering centres and a guide will give you some safety instructions and the equipment you’ll need. Then you’ll be taken coasteering by two instructors – and they’ll tell you what to do.
Tourist:     It sounds perfect. How long does the whole thing take? I’m only here for the day and I need time to shop for souvenirs, too.
Info man:     The coasteering takes around three hours. After that, you’ll have plenty of time to go round the town. It’s very pretty with lots of narrow streets, pubs and great gift shops so you shouldn’t have a problem finding what you want.
   Tourist:     Sounds perfect!
Info man:     Good. Here’s some information. I hope you enjoy your visit.
